Problem Based Learning Compose 2D Shapes

Created by
Michelle Baker
Problem Based Learning requires real-world, standards based inquiry that fosters collaborative learning teams and integration. Here is a PBL task for composing 2D shapes to create composite shapes. Students use 6 trapezoids to compose enough seating for a Birthday Party that has 18 guests. A floor plan is provided in which learning teams must find various ways to compose the 6 trapezoid tables to allow enough room for food, gifts, cake, and a dance or game area.

Elliptical Orbits Project (PBL) - Precalculus Conic Sections & Eccentricity

Created by

This engaging Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity brings conic sections to life by having students explore how ellipses model real-world orbits. Students select a planet, moon, comet, or satellite and use research to gather key data such as eccentricity and orbital measurements, then create a mathematical model using the equation of an ellipse. They will construct and label a diagram, analyze how eccentricity affects the shape of the orbit, and present their findings through a visual project.

Da Vinci Parachute Prototypes -- Hands-on STEM

In this lesson, students solve geometry problems and learn background physics concepts as they build a working model of Leonardo Da Vinci’s parachute. Logic, critical thinking, a bit of Renaissance history, writing and supporting conclusions with details from a source—it’s all here too! Make this extended lesson a cross-curricular, standards-based mini-unit, or just make it a cool building activity. Pick and choose the level of commitment right for you and your students. Quadrilateral Logo Project — Classify and Prove Using Coordinates

Engage your geometry students with a creative, standards-aligned project that blends art, algebra, and reasoning! In this Quadrilateral Logo Project, students design a logo for a fictional robot company called Quadro using geometric properties. They must create and classify quadrilaterals (parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus, and square), include vertex coordinates, and provide mathematical justification using slope and distance formulas.
