This is a scientific method/creative problem solving unit that my GT students look forward to every year! After using the scientific method to test several different variables that can affect the flight of a basic "dart" design paper airplane, students design their own paper airplanes using their findings and have a competition to decide who designed the "ultimate" paper airplane! Before testing, we build basic dart paper airplanes, fly them around outside, and have a discussion of what variabl

Use this radial web diagram to challenge students to think outside of the box. If the answer is "24", then what is the question? Students should be encouraged not to restrict their questions to only math. They can work individually on this activity or with a group. One example is already given.

I have 2 versions, one that details every step exactly and one that requires a little more thinking on the students' parts. I have also included an answer sheet, although answers will vary greatly with the actual measuring.

Candy Corn Investigations - Science Lab Skills Practice for Fall Fun

Want to have your students practice lab skills while having some holiday fun?  Try out these candy corn activities.  The first activity has the students try to determine the mass of a single candy corn.  Definitely have a range of acceptable masses for a single candy corn for the package that you have.  The second activity has students trying out different liquids (I typically use hot and cold water, ethanol, white vinegar, and apple cider vinegar) to determine which best dissolves a candy corn.

This project allowed my students to assume the roles of home renovators and designers! I had recently moved into a new house, and my husband and I were looking for ideas to spruce up our backyard. I merged this desire with my students' desire to exercise their mathematical expertise outside of the textbook and created this project! I really stressed documenting and calculating dimensions with my students, as well as economics, maintaining a budget, and creativity. My grand prize for my class
