Multiply 43 x 92 To solve this problem, we use the Long Multiplication Method. Multiply the multiplicand by each digit of the multiplier then add the results. There are alternative algorithms that allow many students to find other methods that are appealing and easier to navigate. Occasionally students prefer them to the traditional long multiplication method. Try these....make math fun! Distribute this handout to students, teachers, at workshops and on Math Fun Night.

“Long Multiplication Made Easy” is a systematic approach to introducing 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. It is designed to use a step by step process that is predictable and effective. This system should be used as the first three lessons on long multiplication. Admittedly, Common Core has changed the way teachers do math. It seems that the algorithm is buried in a distributive property mud pit. Yet, at the end of the day, it may be the algorithm that makes more sense to your students.

This resource is a clear, structured reference guide for teachers outlining the developmental progression of additive strategies from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3, aligned to the NSW Mathematics curriculum. Rather than isolated strategies or lesson ideas, this document maps how additive thinking develops over time, showing the conceptual links between counting, part–whole understanding, equality, mental strategies, written algorithms, and problem solving. It is designed to support professional learn
