Worksheet - Starter Activity for Standards for Mathematical Practice

Created by
Craig Story
I created this as a quick warm-up activity for the first day of my high school math classes. I needed them to think about the wording of the standards and mathematical language in general. I wanted them to connect the Standards for Mathematical Practice to things they would understand in real life. They enjoyed the activity and it allowed them to have something to do while we worked through the "first-day bumps" after Summer vacation.

Give students a transparent tool to help them label triangles! Students often have trouble labeling parts (such as x, 2x, a, b, c, opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse, etc) of triangles for Special Triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, and Trigonometry. To help my students do this correctly, I give each student a labeled triangle printed on transparency film. Then when students are working on one of these types of problems, they line up their transparency with the problem on their paper. They line up

Factoring Quadratic Equations is a key skill to master in order to both succeed in the base level college course as well as proceeding into higher level maths. This Powerpoint walks through a proven process of factoring Quadratic Equations using a mnemonic MFSD (Math Fella Saves the Day) to help students remember the order and steps in the process.

Tennessee Bridge Math Sequenced for Four Quarters

I am new to teaching Bridge Math and could not find a sequenced document anywhere, so I created one! These standards are all copyrighted by the State of Tennessee, I simply put them into an order that seems to make sense for four quarters of 50-minute class periods. The download included is a Word document so that you can edit this to meet your needs. Thank you for your interest!

This is the shell lesson I created to go along with my Pre-Calculus textbook. It includes graphing of coordinates, derivation and application of distance formula, and derivation and application of midpoint formula. The lesson ends with a plexer of the day puzzle. Could also be used for a College Algebra or Algebra 2 course, or to supplement homeschooling. I base it off of the Larson Pre-Calculus book, Pre-Calculus with Limits.

Sine waves - Favorite Athlete's Biorhythms

This was written for determining the sine waves that describe Peyton Manning's biorhythms before a big game. I use it during our unit on graphing and modeling sine functions. It could be easily adapted to your favorite athlete, politician, musician etc. by just googling their birthdate. Students will determine their own biorhythms as part of this activity. Definitely bogus science but still kind of fun to do.
