This file consists of 5 graphs of functions for which students are asked to give domain and range in interval notation, as inequalities and in set notation. They also are asked for intervals of x where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, negative and constant. For some graphs, students are asked to give intervals of x for which the function is, for example, BOTH positive and decreasing. On the final graphing grid, students are asked to sketch a graph with given attributes. The l

When covering inverse functions, most texts stick to a very consistent notation, which doesn't work so well when your students encounter international symbols for functions, such as in an IB curriculum. I wrote this worksheet to make sure students could have practice with the notation. I use it within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions. The file includes spiral review problems. This worksheet is intended for students to show their w

Graphs of Trigonometric Functions Learning Target Quiz

This quiz was used as a formative assessment in an honors precalculus course, but it could easily be used in an advanced algebra 2 or non-honors precalculus course. It contains the following questions. 1. Find the domain and range (in interval notation, if possible, in set-builder notation otherwise), amplitude, period, phase shift and vertical shift then sketch two complete cycles of the graph of the given sine function. 2. Find the domain and range (in interval notation, if possible, in set

I wrote this daily assessment for my students to show how they were progressing on the topic of functions and using function notation. I project daily assessments at the front board for the first 10 minutes of class, and they typically cover material taught two classes ago, which gives the students a chance to do the homework and ask questions about it before they are assessed. Since my students normally sit at tables for two, I have the kid on the left side of the table take the "left side"

My IB/ Precalculus students were familiar with the concept of shifting and stretching functions, but when I used it in the context of function notation, they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. I wrote this worksheet to help them make sense of what happens to functions that can't easily be manipulated on a graphing calculator. This is an interactive activity I use each year to teach kids how to work composite functions. With it students will work through an interactive and collaborate activity involving function notation, and only function notation. It is designed to 'trick' the students into actually completing a composite function without them knowing. (Just like how you have to trick kids into eating veggies :D ). After each student should have a good basic working understanding of composite functions (Of course ex

This one-day lesson is good for early exploration of the piecewise function and how to obtain the graph of a piecewise function. Concepts such as domain and range and function notation are strengthened or assessed depending upon the learner. It is an activity which leads the learner step-by-step with group work possible and concludes with a whole-class discussion summary.
