Gifted Ed New Years Math Challenge
To celebrate the new year, present this unique challenge to your gifted math students. The directions are explained on the worksheet. Students will need to use math processes to arrive at the value of the new year number, beginning with their age number and moving through ten steps. Students will begin to see the magic of numbers, patterns, and the power that we have in arriving at the answers we need, sometimes through some trial and error, as they complete this New Years Math Challenge.

All you need is masking tape, straws, and paperclips for this engaging and fun activity! Students work in groups to create the tallest structure for the cheapest price. All materials are priced out for you, there is a jobs sheet included, there's a money tracking sheet and a task sheet outlined. This is a great way for kids to participate in a hands on learning activity. It's an integrated activity so students will learn math and engineering concepts.

If 24 is the Answer, What is the Question?
Use this radial web diagram to challenge students to think outside of the box. If the answer is "24", then what is the question? Students should be encouraged not to restrict their questions to only math. They can work individually on this activity or with a group. One example is already given.
