Each time my students receive a 100% on a Newsela Quiz, they get to pick the color of the slip. They then get to write their name on it and hang it on the bulletin board in the hallway. This little trick has motivated my students SO MUCH! They really love having their name in the hallway and it is an easy way to motivate your students to try their best (and take their time!) when they read Newsela.

A First–Then chart is a simple visual tool used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to increase cooperation, task completion, and independence—especially for children who benefit from visual structure. It shows the child what must happen first (a task or expectation) and what will happen next (a preferred reward, activity, or break). This structure reduces anxiety, clarifies expectations, and increases motivation because the child can see what is coming.

This has been so helpful in my first grade classroom! I attached this sign to a popsicle stick and taped it to the inside wall of my finished work bucket. Now, when students go to turn something in, they are reminded to check for their name. I leave a cup of pens and pencils next to the bucket so that students will add their name if they forgot to put it. I have seen a huge decrease in my "no name" paper stack since adding this small element.

For example, if "Leisure" is an area that isn't providing much enjoyment at the moment, a sample goal and matching objectives may be: Goal 1: Discover what I like to

Students get a refresher over a unit/topic of your choosing. You can see what they remember, what they don't, and any questions they have. You can use this to plan review, refresh for tests/quizzes, or when planning future lessons. Students get a set amount of time to write down everything they remember, then as a class, discuss some of their responses, then go back and fill in any information they missed, along with any questions they have.
