Game - INTEGER FOOTBALL

Integer Football is as roll the dice game and competition. The objective for the student is to score, using rules of adding negative and positive integers. The objective for the teacher is to reinforce the rules of integers in a gamelike format. Sidenote: In "real" football, if the running back advances 3.5 yards on the first play of a set of downs, they call it 2nd down and 6 yards to go ... not 6.5 yards to go (on the scoreboard).

GAME: ESTIMATION AND RATES -- "Sammie the slug, slimed up the Eiffel Tower..."

GAME: ESTIMATION & RATESI wrote this game because I knew it would be fun and interesting for secondary school mathematics students, however, it is appropriate for 5th – 12th grades. Even a Chemistry class would benefit from this game, since in Chemistry students learn how to change from grams/mole to moles etc... The student will have to convert units of rate, like miles into feet, and days into hours. The student will have to convert miles per hour to seconds per minute. The student will use th

Mathematics Stories - HAPPY HARRY

Mathematics Stories - HAPPY HARRY - was one of my more "radical" stories. Dividing Fractions and Simplifying Rational Expressions by division are tough for students at different levels of mathematics. I have always "inverted and multiplied" in my head. By the way, the proof of why we have to invert before we multiply (because you want to divide by 1, is too long to really explain, so we tell students ... ) That is the only "formal" algorithm that mathematicians know. Since I always did this in m

My Factor Book (1-10)

Hello! I have found teaching factors can be really difficult, especially in the special education setting. I decided to make these factor books for them to practice, study, and keep handy for referencing throughout the year. This is the first set in the Factor Books, so keep your eyes peeled for the other sets; they will be in sets of 10.

Mathematics Stories - The MAN IN THE TRENCH COAT...(look before you leap)

The MAN IN THE TRENCH COAT, is a story that I tell at the beginning of the school year, and give examples at the beginning of every unit/topic. I kept a "common mistakes" file for each level of mathematics. The teacher can wait until the student makes such a mistake or "front load" the student, as they explain concepts of a given topic. Not only is it good practice to prepare students of such common mistakes, but also by giving these mistakes a title such as "Man in the trench coat", students

MENTAL MATHEMATICSEvery minute you have your amazing students counts.I hated when observing teaching to see them start a lesson without a hook, or end a lesson and give students free time. I used to factor in time for mental math so that students could gain speed and accuracy.

Game: MAKE A NUMBER...

With permission from Marcy Cook, I have adapted her, "Number TILES" activity to MAKE A NUMBER. When you tell students, "I want you to use five - 3's to make 100", they will try all sorts of combinations (this one is a tough one). Keep the frustration threshold low, by perhaps saying, "write all of your equations down for 1 point each, and I will give 100 point bonus if you can find an equation = 100." I allow 33(3)+3/3 (two digit 33 using two of the 3's) The objective of a game like this is t

Game: BINGO BOOGEY

This review game -- BINGO BOOGEY is as variation on the traditional BINGO game. The variation comes from randomly selecting a student to do a particular problem. The other students who put classmates names in the squares hope their name and their friends' names are called. Get your rewards and incentives ready! I did silly things like set a timer for 8 minutes, and when that went off, the next student's name that I called won an automatic reward. This game is for all levels and all subjects. If

Mathematics Stories - CROSS MULTIPLY is COOL!

Teacher, "Why do we CROSS MULTIPLY?"Students, "Because it is COOL!"My father, Mick Constuble had a credential called, "Life", which meant that he could teach anything -- Advanced French 4, English Composition or even Advanced Placement Calculus. When I became a teacher in 1985, I will never forget him telling me, "The single most important mathematics concept that I taught was CROSS MULTIPLYING." That stuck with me. I hadn't realized how frequently that I would cross multiply in my mathematics j
