In Montessori education, we offer children the opportunity to be "actors on the stage of reality," as Dr.Montessori said. This means that we go much deeper than offering a toy kitchen and cooking in facsimile. Our kindergartners often have enough experience that they are ready for advanced challenges that involve aspects of their learning from each of the 4 Montessori areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language and Math. In my classroom, one of the pinnacle lessons is the Bread/Pizza Making.

Cooking AAC Core Word Display with Boardmaker.
This AAC display using Boardmaker is a fantastic way to promote engagement, conversation and understanding, during cooking lessons, for students' with Complex Communication Needs. It can be printed and laminated in A3 and used during cooking to teach students' common kitchen appliances, utensils and actions. By promoting communication, students are kept engaged during whole class instruction and one-on-one modelling and discussion.
