Nothing is more exciting to students entering your room than a crime scene to investigate! In this activity, students go through interactive websites and have great group discussions about how detective work relates to the scientific method. This is how I introduce some of the long-standing vocabulary to students and it always reels them in. The last activity is a student evaluation of a real-world science experiment found online. This works well as a traditional or flipped assignment.

Lab: Science Inquiry and KNex Landers KIOSK

In 2008, the entire 11th grade class of Mainland high school ran a lab to determine the ideal shape for a hypothetical mail delivery device called a, "KNex Lander". The original design (made of KNex... of course) was created by a pair of Embry Riddel engineering students. Students tested the design, then they tested a litany of improvements on that design. This file simulates that activity using the actual data generated. It follows the process from measurement, through data crunching to graphi

Chemical Reaction Lab - Making Observations and Drawing Inferences

In this lab, we take a look at the reaction between baking soda and vinegar, and its effect on a flame. By taking what they know about fire (fire triangle), and the observations that they make during the lab, students will need to determine if this reaction does indeed create CO2 gas, as the chemical formula shows. The lab is meant to be used with my Informal Science Lab Report, and there is also a supplemental video of the lab available as well.
