How to boil cold water without heating it. What Causes a Liquid to Boil?

Water normally boils by heating it and goes thru several stages before the hottest water in the container starts to boil. When boiling cold water the bubbles start everywhere and not just at the bottom of the container. A vacuum pump can make the cold water boil. Knowledge of vapor pressure is the key to understanding this. Boiling occurs when a liquid's vapor pressure equals or exceeds the total pressure of gases over the liquid...atmospheric pressure. This is attained by reducing the overhead p

I created this Google Slides file with features from Nearpod to gauge prior knowledge and check for understanding. I use this with Google Meet for distance learning instruction but could easily be adapted to zoom or in class use. You would need to get the free Nearpod add-on for Slides and a free Nearpod account if you do not have one. I also used an app called Solar Walk 2 (free) to enhance the content. I have a slide with QR codes for the free version for iOS and Android devices. I gave t

This is NOT a lesson on how to round significant figures. It is just one slide formative assessment to see if students can follow the rules for adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing sig figs (after you've taught a lesson). There are 6 problems students can try, then you click for answers to come on one step at a time. I usually print 6 on a page, so students have a little paper to write on & staple into their notes.

Wave Pool Problem

This is used as a problem to pose to teams of students. I put the problem up on the board and students work in their teams on coming up with their design and solution explanation. I usually give them about 15 minutes or so but it will depend on the level of your students. They then submit their solution and I review them to check on understanding. You can have students do this individually as a formative assessment of wave properties as well.

A completely resourced lesson on Physics - Resultant Forces The starter begins with review of pupil knowledge on forces basics through a quick quiz which prompts initial discussion on what forces are and also the difference between mass and weight. A class activity is detailed which uses just string and newton meters to carry out a scaled down and safer version of tug-of-war resultant forces. This allows for key conclusion to be drawn from observation relating to resultant forces. Discussion

A simple presentation to aid explanation of the role of radiation intensity in the photoelectric effect once the threshold frequency of the metal has been exceeded. Students often misunderstand the inability of increased intensity to trigger the photoelectric effect and therefore believe it has no role. This presentation is a visual aid to help the teacher show that it has a role in controlling the number of photons arriving per unit time. This presentation compares a source of low inte
