This is a fun assignment that I created, which I found students really getting in to. Have them choose a magazine theme of their interest (Be sure to screen the type of magazine that they choose as some students may try to push the envelope with their content). I use this in my desktop publishing unit in my Grade 11 and 12 Computer classes.
