Instead of lecturing my students on calculating a percent of increase or decrease (percentage increase/percentage decrease), as I used to do, I now start class with a mini-lesson (15-20 minutes in length) to go over just the main idea of what they will be learning about today. I include one or two example problems so they get the main idea, and then it's their turn. As soon as the mini-lesson is over, I set them to task on this worksheet. I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I c

It is hard to find graphs for students to be able to identify where a function is increasing, decreasing, constant, domain, range, maximums, minimums, and function values. I have worked really hard over the years to create my own graph to use as practice or even a quiz on these topics.

These topics include: domain, range, positive, negative, increasing, and decreasing intervals, extrema, end behavior, asymptotic behavior, inverses (graphs), one-to-one, symmetry (graphic and algebraic), and finding domains algebraically. I used it for extra credit practice before a quiz in Algebra 2 Honors.

I have created a wonderful quiz on the library of functions. I have used Cubic function, Absolute value function, Identity function, Square root function, Square function, and Reciprocal function. Students must match the graph, name, domain, range, increasing, decreasing for each function. This quiz is a great tool for assessing your students understanding of the characteristics for each function.

Linear vs. Exponential

Sometimes students just need to practice writing equations. Here is a worksheet that allows the students to write linear equations and exponential equations from tables. They then have to decide if the function is linear or exponential and increasing or decreasing. I created this worksheet 5 years ago and every year I hear students say, "Oh, that's the difference." It doesn't take long and makes a great worksheet for after a quiz or as a homework assignment.

Easy concept--not sure why I didn't think of it sooner! My kids have always struggled with intervals of increase and decrease until this year! I decided to organize each concept in columns and use the same graph in each column. This allowed us to highlight specific sections and work on representing that section accordingly. Instead of having all parts on one graph, which becomes convoluted, this made it much easier for the kids to see exactly what I had been trying to explain. A ton of my s
