This activity was used in my classroom of 7th grade math students. I divided the class into groups of 2 or 3 and handed them the cut up cards. I told them to sort the cards in any way they can (as long as they could explain why) and they were given three minutes. At the end of the 3 minutes, I had each group tell me how and why they sorted their cards.
