I started teaching my students to use IDEAS in their thesis statements instead of things, and I saw a rapid increase in understanding and analysis. This is the first activity I do in my AP Lang classroom. It starts with a simple journal about pizza, then provides an example before explaining why it is important to shape our arguments into ideas!
