Graphing Performance Task (Proportional Relationship)

Created by
Stacey Frizzell
This is a performance task where students will create their own single or 4-quadrant graph (both are provided) in order to represent a proportional relationship. They can choose any topic (miles/hours, cost/items, etc.), and create data that represents a proportional relationship. This is great for a group task just before the unit test or quiz to apply skills such as identifying proportional graphs and tables, calculating the constant of proportionality, writing equations to represent a graph o

Do you use Eureka Math or EngageNY math in your third grade classroom? Have you tried using it for Math Workshop? No, but you'd like to ? You might enjoy this file, then! This is not a supplement to Eureka Math. You will not find any extra quizzes, tests, or worksheets in this file. This is just my outline of how I am taking this program into a math workshop approach, specifically Module 6, while attempting to follow it as closely as possible. My hope is to make it interesting and fun for

How Does Your Body Use Energy?

Watch a video of Dr. Samuel Urlacher and his team explaining their research in human energetics and metabolism to 5th and 6th grade students. Next, students get to see how their own body energetics change when they exercise by doing 4 simple activities and measuring: breaths per minute, heart rate, blood pressure, and percent of oxygen in their blood. Students will compare change between resting and after activity, and also compare their energetics to national norms.

This PBL also hits data collection, representing data in a graph, and much more! Common Core Standards: 5.NBT.A.3: Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandt

This is a set of three coordinate grids containing the coordinate pairs of three animals from The One and Only Ivan (by Katherine Applegate): a gorilla, an elephant, and a dog. Although they are animals from that novel, they can be used on their own without referencing the book. These are all original pieces of art I drew then listed the appropriate coordinates. They provide good practice in finding and plotting coordinates on a grid - one of the Common Core math standards for Grade 5. Although

Linear functions provide a great introduction to function concepts of input and output as well as giving students insight into the relationship between tables, equations and graphs. This mission is aligned with Common Core State Standards: 8.FA.1, 8.FA.2, 8.FA.3, HSF.BF.A.1.A, HSA.CED.A.1, HSA.CED.A.2. The fun stuff: Magic genies! They take your candies and then return a different amount, sometimes more (yaay!), sometimes less (boo!). Why? How? Because they are functions and they do arithmetic!

One of my favorite activities to do at the beginning of the year is a name graph. It's a quick little activity that allows me to quickly assess which of my students know how to spell their name, who can write their own name, and who can count. We do the graph as a whole class, but you could use this page as a student recording sheet as well. You could also project the graph and do it on the computer. I may use our school's poster maker to blow it up to a large size so I can hang it up for a

In the Drawing with Coordinates activity, students will create their own designs by plotting coordinate pairs on paper. They trade their list of coordinate pairs with a partner, who attempts to recreate the original image to see how accurate their algorithm was. Students then enter the same list of ordered pairs into the Coordinate Drawer web app and explore how changing points and reflections affect their designs.
