With a degree in mathematics and over 10 years of teaching experience, my goal has always been simple: to make math more approachable and enjoyable for both educators and students. Throughout my teaching career, I have noticed that students often possess the ability to comprehend mathematical concepts but struggle when it comes to applying their knowledge to solve problems. This challenge becomes particularly apparent when they encounter word problems. To address this issue, I design my worksheets to focus heavily on word problems, as they require students to employ problem-solving skills. By incorporating word problems into my teaching materials, I aim to strengthen students' ability to analyze and interpret real-world scenarios mathematically. These problems encourage students to think critically, identify relevant information, apply appropriate problem-solving strategies, and arrive at accurate solutions. Working on these types of problems not only enhances their mathematical abilities but also develops their analytical thinking, logical reasoning, and decision-making skills. I believe that equipping students with strong problem-solving skills is crucial for their overall success in mathematics. One question I've heard countless times over the years is, "When will I ever use this?" Sound familiar? No matter what career path your students dream of pursuing, the problem-solving and critical thinking skills they develop through math are skills they'll carry with them for life. With confidence and curiosity, their possibilities are truly boundless. And if word problems tend to cause a little panic, don't worry. I'll be sharing tips, strategies, and ideas to help students tackle them with confidence. My teaching philosophy is flexible and adaptable, tailored to meet the unique needs of each student and subject matter. I firmly believe in diagnosing the underlying issues and addressing the specific areas where students require assistance. Rather than simply providing them with answers, I guide them through a series of thought-provoking questions that lead them to discover the solutions on their own. These questions are designed to reinforce the fundamental principles and concepts relevant to the subject at hand. By following this approach, I gain valuable insights into the students' strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to tailor the learning experience and provide them with targeted practice. I focus on introducing new topics covered in class while ensuring they continually work on strengthening their foundational skills. This includes tasks such as parsing information, visualizing concepts, creating models, and working with numbers and symbols. I understand that some students may initially feel impatient with this approach, as they may prefer quick answers. However, as they progress and face exams or challenging problems, they come to appreciate the practice gained from tackling underlying issues. This approach ultimately leads to a mastery of the course's fundamentals, setting a solid foundation for their future academic success. I firmly believe that guiding students to discover answers on their own fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. It empowers them to become independent learners who can tackle complex problems with confidence.
