You shouldn't ever feel silly asking a question, especially a math one!

Number strings are short mental math activities designed so that students work several calculations in their head then provide the answer in chorus, on paper, either verbally, with whiteboards, or pencil and paper.

One thing you can do to make this activity more hands-on is to recite each part of the math riddle and ask students to write down their answer. Then read the next math sentence ("string"), etc. Have students write their answer on their personal whiteboard and place it upside down on their desks.

A sample of a number string and another way you can use it in class is as follows:
"Begin with the number of legs on a cat. (4)
Add the number of wheels on a bicycle. (4 + 2 = 6)
Subtract the number of teachers in the classroom right now. (6 – ?)

When I say: 'Show me the answer', I want you to raise the same number of fingers in the air as your answer.

'Are you ready? Show me the answer!'”

Does this answer your question? If not, let me know! Kids really love these. You can use them as warm-ups or cool-downs, in stations or individually, etc. I love printing them on shipping labels and inserting them in index card spiral books which can be stored in the students' pencil boxes/pouches.

Have a great school year! Let me know if you are interested in anything else math-related and I will do my best to come up with material for you. Also, consider "following me" for more fun stuff coming in the future!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught Math for 18 years to children and teenagers from Kindergarten through 11th Grades. I am an educational speaker at several conferences, some of which include the MMC and ICTM. I have also initiated a Math Enrichment Club for Grades 1 - 3. Currently, I am teaching high school math. When possible, I assist with math coaching at various schools throughout the Chicago area.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I absolutely love teaching and love children! I am a natural-born teacher who is passionate about education and how children learn. I practically came out of the womb as a teacher! My ultimate goal is to inspire and help other teachers educate children conceptually and with meaning. It is my hope and dream to make a difference in the math education world by encouraging and working with others to bring real life math into the classrooms and into the homes of students.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am a member of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics and have presented at several conferences to other educators. I have been nominated for the Golden Apple Award.
