Description

Experiment with using ramps and Newton’s Second Law of Motion and then build your own ramp in this fabulous STEM Challenge! Students love this one! This is more than a STEM Challenge! Students experiment with ramps and then use their data to design and build their own ramp. Can they use that data to their benefit?

What is the challenge?

  • This STEM Challenge will have your students experimenting with cars and ramps.
  • They will test ramp heights and what happens when weight is added to the cars.
  • Finally, they will use their data as they design and build their own ramps.
  • How does Newton’s laws of Motion fit in this? How high should a ramp be? What happens if you use too much weight? What happens if your ramp is too steep? Does a ramp need side rails? How do you make a smooth transition at the end of the ramp? All questions that will be part of this challenge!

What is included?

  • The lesson guide provides a materials list, a preparation list, extra information about Newton’s Laws in simple language, and step-by-step lesson procedures to follow to make this a great experience.
  • Three pages of Helpful Hints will give you ideas of specific things to think about while using this package.
  • A two-page lab sheet is included - as well as photos.

What is your prep?

We spent three days on this challenge. Each day was a build-up to the next day's challenge. This activity was well designed with all the background information needed to reinforce the concepts being taught. Most importantly, it was hands-on and fun for the kids to explore Newton's 2nd Law of Motion
