What others say
Description
Good health is something most of us take for granted right up until we don't have it anymore. Your adult ESL students likely have strong opinions about what makes a healthy lifestyle, how their home country's approach to medicine compares to what they experience now, and yes, whether that thing their grandmother swore by actually works. These 104 health-themed conversation cards give them plenty to talk about.
A full set of cards on one theme means you can drop these into a health unit, use them as warm-up fillers, or hand them to a group that's run out of things to say and watch the conversation take off on its own.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
✅ 104 health-themed conversation starter cards, each printed individually (great for small group or pair work)
✅ Teacher suggestion page with usage tips and links to additional resources
✅ Easel version with one discussion prompt per slide for whole-class display
HOW TO USE THESE CARDS
Before class, flip through the cards and pull the ones that fit your group best. Some questions are lighter warm-up material. Others will get into some genuinely interesting territory around cultural attitudes toward medicine, mental health, and personal choices.
During class, deal out a card or two per group, give them a few minutes to discuss, then open it up to the full class. The Easel version works well when you want everyone reacting to the same prompt at once.
THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
These cards are built for intermediate to advanced adult learners who are ready to go beyond simple vocabulary and engage with real opinions. The range of questions means you can start a session with something accessible and build toward the more thought-provoking prompts as your students warm up. They also work well as writing prompts or impromptu speaking topics when you need something on the spot.
⚠️ A heads up: A few cards touch on marijuana. There are no questions related to sex. Read through before class and set aside anything that's not right for your particular group.
GRAB IT AND GO
Download, print, cut, and you're set. Laminate if you want. Or skip all of that and use the Easel version. Either way, your students are doing the talking and you're not scrambling to come up with the next question.
If you teach conversation classes regularly, take a look at my Adult ESL Discussion Topics MEGA Bundle. It pulls together over two thousand discussion questions across 28 themes, so you'll always have something on hand when a conversation stalls or you need to fill time.
