Description

Immersing my adult ESL students in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders was an absolute joy. Witnessing many of them embrace reading for the first time was truly rewarding. Yet, this was more than mere storytime. Just as we encourage students to share their background knowledge before starting something new, reflecting on personal experience, beliefs, and opinions helps prime students’ minds for what they are about to read or hear.

Focusing on your students' responses to a novel transcends typical reading comprehension questions by unlocking a deeper understanding of their emotional and intellectual engagement. It encourages:

  • critical thinking
  • personal connections
  • nuanced discussions

Exploring diverse perspectives and individual interpretations makes the learning experience more profound, meaningful, and inclusive.

This resource includes:

  • ✅ 1 comprehensive teacher's guide

  • ✅ 12 sets of reflection task cards, totaling ⚞48⚟ cards, covering every unit in the book with varying card counts per section

These reflection discussion cards are organized by unit without page numbers, acknowledging the varying pagination across different editions. I recommend annotating corresponding page numbers from your class's specific copy of The Outsiders to smoothly integrate these cards into your teaching plan. Careful consideration was given to avoid major spoilers, ensuring an engaging exploration without prematurely revealing key plot points.

Designed for my high-intermediate to advanced ESL adult learners, these reflective questions aim to stimulate thoughtful discussions. Additionally, I offer Going Deeper discussion cards centered more on the book's events and the students' emotional responses. Both the reflective and "deeper" questions go beyond reading comprehension, sparking enriching discussions about the narrative's impact on perceptions and emotions.

SE Hinton's book, THE OUTSIDERS, deeply resonated with my adult ESL students and sparked a desire to read more in many of my formerly anti-book students! How did I turn what they thought was a tedious task into something that made chronically late students show up early? I made it all about what t
