Description

Second Grade Number Talks! SAVE $1.50 by buying this BUNDLE! Mental Math activities for second grade! Critical thinking and creative number talk tasks! Goes beyond just typical number talks to really get your students thinking!

This resource is your go-to number talk resource for second grade! With 160 no-prep, unique number talk ideas in five different categories AND Number Talk sentence starters and tools you have everything you need to get number talks started, and keep them going all year in your classroom!

These number talk category cards include five different categories spanning across all four domains in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics for Second Grade. A description of the categories and standard alignments are listed below.

  • Target Number: Make the number listed on the card in as many ways as possible. Includes challenge cards to encourage students to be creative with the ways they make the numbers. 2.NBT.A.1, 2.NBT.A.3
  • Balanced Equations: Students find the missing value that makes both sides of the equation balanced/equal. Missing value start unknown and addend unknown. Within 20, within 50, within 100 and within 1,000 cards included. Numbers encourage compensation and mental math strategies. 2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2, 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.7, 2.NBT.B.8
  • True or False: Students determine whether comparisons and equations are true or false using understanding of place value and addition and subtraction. Three-digit number comparisons addition and subtraction within 100 with and without regrouping. Add and subtract 10 and 100. 2.NBT.A.4, 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.6, 2.NBT.B.8
  • What Doesn’t Belong: A mixed category where students identify the one out of four things that doesn’t belong. Covers a wide range of topics and there is more than one correct answer/interpretation for some which encourages discussion and students proving their thinking! 2.G.A.1, 2.MD.C.7, 2.MD.C.8, 1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.B.2
  • How Many More: A great way to have students solve subtraction problems framed as missing addend or addition problems (I call it a sneaky subtraction number talk). Start unknown, Change unknown/compare and end unknown all included. 2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2, 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.8

These cards can be easily printed on cardstock, cut and laminated to use year after year! I recommend putting them under a document camera so students can see them closer for whole group number talk, or using the cards in small group number talks. This resource also includes a recording sheet if you want to use the cards differently and do an around the room scavenger hunt where students solve each card independently, or if you want to use them for math centers instead. Resource includes 160 unique cards (32 cards per category).

ALSO included in this bundle are Number Talk Tools to get number talks started in your classroom!

Aligned to the Standards for Mathematical Practice! MP1, MP3, MP6!

7 different color options included in this product! Colorful and bright these are perfect for laminating and using all year long!

Great tools to help set up the routines of your math classroom and to support number talks in your classroom!

Setting up classroom routines at the beginning of the year in math class is crucial to the success of your math block for the rest of the year and this product is an important piece of setting routines for math discussion. Sometimes, you may not even know exactly what your class needs, so you may need to reset your routines mid-year and this product is perfect for that too! When setting routines it is important to be explicit in directing students where to turn in homework or when to use the bathroom etc., but it is equally as important to explicitly teach how to have a productive classroom discussion.

It takes time to build a classroom community in math class where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and contributing to discussion. By providing students with clear expectations at the beginning of the year for classroom discussions and by giving students sentence stems for how they can contribute to the discussion you make math discussion accessible to all students which ultimately leads to more rich math discussions, and thus deeper understanding. This product will help build the environment where engaging math discussions happen!

This product includes 9 pages of tools to support building mathematical discourse in your classroom (in 7 different color sets)! The pages include the following:

  • Two different versions of math discussion practices (rules and agreements to create a respectful math discussion) in mini-posters
  • A mini-poster for number talk norms (rules to help your number talks go smoothly and respectfully in your classroom)
  • A mini-poster of sentence-stems for students to use during classroom discussions
  • Student cards with the sentence-stems to use during classroom discussion
  • A mini-poster of the number talk hand-signals and the meaning of each hand signal
  • Student personal bookmarks with the number talk hand-signals and the meaning of each signal so they can use them during classroom discussion
  • Teacher Talk Moves to promote classroom discussion reference sheet and clipboard sized reference sheet!

Color options included in the number talk tools:

  • Purple
  • Black
  • Red
  • Green
  • Light Blue
  • Royal Blue
  • Pink

I hope you enjoy this number talk bundle!
