Description of Math Mysteries | Baseball Bandit Project: This project includes 14 pages per level of engaging math story problems! Embedded in the story problems are reading passages at an approximate 410-600 Lexile level so they are great for second grade readers! If the reading level is too challenging for students, you can always do this project in small groups or as a read-aloud at school or at home.
Look for the level key on the bottom right side of each page to ensure that students are working on the correct level. Both levels of this project are aligned to standards 2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2, 2.NBT.A.4, 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.6, 2.NBT.B.7, 2.MD.B.5 & 2.MD.C.7, The project is also aligned to ELA standards CCSS.ELA-LITERATURE-2.3 and ELA-LITERATURE.2.10. The levels include the following types of problems:
- Level 1: addition and subtraction within 1,000, fluency within 20 and 100. Some regrouping included. Mostly one step problems with result unknown with some compare and unknown addend problems. Clocks with hour and half hours.
- Level 2: addition and subtraction within 1,000, fluency within 20 and 100. Regrouping on most problems. Mixed story problem structure with some multi-step problems. Clocks with hour, half hour and quarter hours.
How does it work?
- Students are presented with a mystery situation, and the possible suspects for who committed the crime.
- Students read the alibi statements for each character and solve the related math problem(s) on each page.
- Students use the additional details, clues, detective conversations and information to determine who is guilty of the crime.
- Students determine who they think is guilty. Then they solve the final problem to see if they are correct. In order for this to work, they must solve every problem correctly. If they find that the final problem is unsolvable, or their answer is not a possible option, then they need to go back and check their work!
Resource opens as a ZIP file. A paper PDF version is included AND a Digital Version of the project is included. Students can use Microsoft Power Point to access the digital version OR Google. Students can easily enter their answers into the easy-to-use "type your answer here" boxes and save their work as a PDF to submit to their teacher! OR You can also upload the Power Point to Google Slides to have students submit their work on Google.
Description of Ice Cream Party Math Enrichment Project:
Using the Project Based Learning approach, this project reinforces addition, subtraction and multiplication fluency! Students choose the number of guests to invite to the party so they can do the same project again and again and the answers will be different depending on the number of guests they invite!
It is aligned to standards 2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.C.4, 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.6, 2.NBT.B.7, 2.NBT.B.8, 3.OA.A.1 3.OA.A.2, 3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.D.8 and 3.NBT.A.2
Skills include:
- Adding and subtracting within 100
- Using repeated addition as a base for multiplication
- Skip count by 100s
- Add up to four two-digit numbers
- Mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a given number
- Multiplication fact fluency
- Single step story problems
- Multi-step contextual problems including addition, subtraction and multiplication
- Interpreting factors and products
- Solving contextual multiplication problems within 100
- Fluently adding and subtracting within 1,000
There are 2 versions of the project, designed to be differentiated for your class and to help scaffold students towards independent problem solving. Each version is 29 pages long and includes 5 different parts of planning the party (each part includes 8-11 questions on over 4 pages for each part)!
- Problem Solving Support: The first version (pages 7-36), includes story problem solving graphic organizers for each problem to help scaffold your students towards solving the single and multi-step story problems. This version is great for your students that need to practice fluency and need support making story problems more accessible.

This provides a more challenging opportunity for students to determine the steps to solve each problem. This is great for your students who are fluent in their facts but need to work on interpreting story problems independently.
