When many people think of classroom transformations, they think:

“This would take me hours to set up.”

“This is going to cost so much money.”

“This looks so overwhelming.”

“I could never do this!”

What if I told you classroom transformations could be EASY to set up, FUN to implement, and STRESS-FREE?

Let's Start with the Basics...What is a Classroom Transformation?

A room transformation changes your room into a certain setting or theme to engage students in their own learning with rigorous content.

Classroom transformations are possible in EVERY classroom. You don’t have to spend hours of your time setting up a classroom transformation or spend lots of money to make it SO MUCH FUN!

Skills Included

determine if a number is even or odd

determine if a group of objects is even or odd

work with numbers equal to or less than 20

write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends

If you're looking for ways to make more meaningful connections to math in the real world, this is the activity for you! Students will embark upon a day as a zookeeper who is trying to collect all of the zoo animals who are on the loose while practicing this difficult math concept at the same time. Even and odd numbers can be difficult for 2nd graders and this activity is great practice!

A Quick Description

Help your students become math experts in your classroom! Students complete even and odd challenges that are real-world related. This math activity is perfect for second graders. It aligns with 2.OA.3.

Print out all 30 animal problems. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they are zookeepers today and will complete all challenges. They have to find all the animals you've left around the room and solve each problem that goes with each one. I like to have students write an equation and show their work on every question before I will check their work. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.

There are 4 different versions included so that you can use what you need! There are 4 different versions of the recording sheet and 4 different versions of the zoo animal problem cards (4 to a page in color, 4 to a page in black and white, 4 different animals per page in color, 4 different animals per page in black and white). By including four options, you can save on paper, ink, or anything in between!

How to Play

Step 1: Tell your class they are zookeepers today and will practice with even and odd numbers. Students solve math challenges around the room. Scatter the animals all over for kids to find. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.

Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 30 animals questions (in color or black and white) and a recording sheet for each kid. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin!

Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice!

Step 3: When students finish all the challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included.

Step 4: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about zoos that they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper.
