Description

This 3rd grade word problem resource includes FIFTY-ONE 3 and 4 digit addition word problems that can be used for interactive math notebooks, math warm-ups, or guided math. *I always have my students complete their word problem of the day with a partner, then once they have completed the word problem, they may go ahead to math games/centers.

You can't teach math without word problems! I LOVE word problems. I love the critical thinking part of it, the real-world application, and I TRULY believe it's what helps us become higher-level thinkers and critical thinkers--things our students absolutely need. Word problems relate math to the real world and allow children to see math all around them. And...of course..with all of the rigor increasing on standardized tests, students need tons of practice and CONSISTENT practice with word problems. They are the key to helping students succeed in math.

This resource includes 35 word problems (enough for one math unit) and 16 BONUS WORD PROBLEMS, so a total of 51 Word Problems! They can be used daily either as morning work or prior to your math lesson as a math warm-up, at the end of your math block, or for the Math Journal rotation during Guided Math You could also use them in small groups or with a parent volunteer/teacher assistant.

The set includes the following skills:

  • Two Digit with Regrouping
  • Three Digit with Regrouping in just the ones place
  • Three Digit with Regrouping in ones and tens place
  • Estimation Addition
  • Multistep
  • Four Digit Addition with Regrouping

The word problems in this resource are available in three different formats. Each format includes the Day of the Week at the top OR Problem Number in case you don’t want to use them in accordance to the days of the week, and would rather mix and match to create a word problem curriculum that works for you.

1. PowerPoint Slides: When you download this file, you will get a PowerPoint file and a PDF file with the slides/word problems, so you can choose which format is best for you. The PowerPoint slides format can be displayed on your smartboard or projected on your whiteboard or screen. There is a number and letter in the corner of the slides that matches up with the interactive notebook and word problem strips. This helps you find the correlating problem.

2. Strips for Math Journal: You can have your students glue the pre-cut word problem strips into their math journal, then show their work and mathematical thinking there.

3. Interactive Notebook Printable: I LOVE interactive notebook activities. They are engaging for our students and I also love that it also creates a great student portfolio for parents! You can have your students glue the weekly (Monday-Friday) interactive notebook printable in their math journals and work on one word problem daily. OR you can have your students glue the Problem #1-#5 interactive notebook printable in their math journals and work on ALL FIVE problems during Independent Work Time or a Math Rotation.

My word problems are always correlated with the standard being taught at the time. This allows for the students to apply their learning to a higher level activity AND get that consistent practice. For example, when doing a unit on three and four digit addition, the word problems will also be on three and four digit addition.

I hope you enjoy these! I would appreciate any positive feedback below!

My students loved using this resource for their follow-up assignment! They were engaged in the resource and had no trouble getting started. It didn't take much time to prepare this resource, so it was easy for me to use in a time crunch. I adapted it a little bit for my emerging learners and had them skip some of the more challenging questions.
