These resources are complementary to your existing math curriculum. Often, these are the pieces missing from our day-to-day standards-focused instruction. With a traditional basal curriculum, a spiral doesn't typically exist. Instead, students work through standards by units and often don't revisit those standards again later. Research shows students need several repetitions to add something to their long-term memory, so we need to give them ongoing practice.
Additionally, when we only give students word problem practice within defined units, they notice the routine and don't always focus on the context. We need to give students opportunities to work with rigorous problems in ongoing ways to ensure students are applying new strategies and getting ample opportunities to practice the standards throughout the year.
