Description

3rd grade project based learning, measurement and geometry project! Elapsed time, area and perimeter problems, pictographs, polygon identification and more! Digital version included! Compatible with Google Slides and Google Classroom and now includes a Google Slides version of the project!

Your students always want to know when they are going to use math in the real world! They also love dreaming about what they will be when they grow up! This project is a great combination of these two ideas! Students get to choose a career path and see how that job uses measurement and geometry in the real world!

This project is perfect for third grade students working on measurement and geometry application skills. It includes single step and multi-step problems. It also shows measurement/geometry in a variety of different contexts. It works great as an end-of-unit project for third grade for beginning-of-unit review project for fourth grade!

In this project, students choose the job that sounds most interesting to them and then they complete the project on the pages designated for that career choice. The career choices include server, firefighter, small business owner and photographer. Each job includes 7 pages of fun and engaging measurement/geometry application practice. A description of the 7 pages is listed below:

  • One page of story problems of possible measurement/geometry situations for that job
  • A one-page extended story problem task
  • A two-page math task about a scenario someone with that job might encounter
  • A two-page math task where the student is put into the role of that job
  • A fun page where students get to take ownership of the career choice and create/design something related to their job choice

This project works great for independent practice, small groups, a distance learning project, an end-of-unit project, an early finisher option and more! At the end you can have a “career fair” where students can showcase their work in that particular career!

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of measurement/geometry application practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! Level One has one notebook at the bottom of the page and Level Two has two notebooks at the bottom of the page. See below for a standard-alignment guide for in each section of the project.

  • Level One: Elapsed time problems with start unknown, end unknown and difference unknown with “friendly” times and single-step problems. Single-step geometry identification problems and single-step area/perimeter problems. Pictographs included with some two-step problems.
  • Level Two: Elapsed time problems with start unknown, end unknown and difference unknown with times to the minute and less “friendly” times, jumping over the hour etc. with some multi-step problems. Single and Multi-Step geometry identification problems, some open ended and area/perimeter problems with composite figures. Pictographs included with two-step problems and more challenging pictographs.

There is also a digital version included which is compatible with Google Classroom, so this is a great option for distance learning!

Here is standard-alignment guide for each section of the project. Each career in the project is aligned to standards 3.MD.A.1, 3.MD.B.3, 3.MD.D.8, 3.G.A.1 (and 3.G.A.3 in the Tennessee State Standards for Mathematics), while some have additional standard alignments. Based on the standard-alignment guide you may choose a career for specific students based on what you need them to practice, however all careers cover these standards so no matter which career a student works on, they will get application practice for all standards listed above.
