This Understanding Fractions Mini-unit includes both print & digital resources to help you guide your students virtually or in person to solid conceptual understanding of fractions.

The Understanding Fractions mini-unit extends student understanding of unit fractions to non-unit fractions.

They experience fractions as represented by partitioned shapes, points on a number line, and fractions of a set.

Separate lessons are included exploring equal sharing problems with fractions and decomposing and composing with unit fractions.

Lessons Included:

  • 2.1 Partitioning shapes
  • 2.2 On a number line
  • 2.3 Fractions of a set
  • 2.4 Equal sharing word problems
  • 2.5 Composing and decomposing with unit fractions

EACH LESSON INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
Represent a fraction 1/𝘣 on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into 𝘣 equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/𝘣 and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/𝘣 on the number line.
