Description
These are short and sweet Halloween themed math activity sheets that allow your 4th grade students to show what they know about using partial quotients to solve division problems. These can provide a quick formative assessment to let you know if they are understanding basic math skills related to division. These are also perfect for a sub, morning work, homework, and a center activity, too!
Which common core standard does this partial quotient division activity help reinforce? 4.NBT.B.6 - Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors.
How many sheets are include? There are 7 different sheets. Each sheet has a different Halloween themed image at the top. There are 5 versions that have predetermined problems already on the sheets. There is 1 version that does not have problems typed in. You can have students write in their own.
What are the students asked to do on the division activity sheets? They are asked to solve 2-3 division problems using partial quotients
NOTE: There are only 2-3 problems on each of the sheet choices. These sheets aren't meant to be a long in depth assignment. They are for a quick check or review. If you are looking for lots of problems on one page, this activity does not have that.
What kinds of problems are included on the 5 different versions?
- two digits divided by one digit with designated space to write friendly products (2 problems)
- three digits divided by one digit w/ designated space to write friendly products (2 problems)
- four digits divided by one digit with designated space to write friendly products (2 problems)
- three digits divided by one digit with no space designated for friendly products (3 problems)
- four digits divided by one digit with no space designated for friendly products (3 problems)
- NOTE: I are also 2 blank templates included. These are so that you can have your students write in their own division problems to solve. IMPORTANT- You can not TYPE on the sheets and edit them. Any problems will have to be handwritten on the blank templates.
Are there answer sheets included? Yes, I did include answers, but I did not show how to solve each problem. This is because students can pick their own partial quotients to use. That's the great thing about this division strategy.
Is anything else included? I did include a title that says 'Show What You Know', which can be hung as a title above your hallway or bulletin board display. It has Halloween themed pictures on some of the letters.
Do the kids have to color the sheet? Coloring it is not necessary, but the directions on the page do ask them to cut it out. I have my kids complete the sheet, color it, and then after I check it and any corrections are made, I hang them as my hallway display. The coloring really only takes a few minutes and most kids love being able color for a short time.
Where can these be displayed? They make a fun Halloween themed bulletin board or hallway display.
How might I implement this into my classroom? I used it as a quick formative assessment after I have taught all of the skills. I could tell really quickly who did and didn't understand division using partial quotients.
You could also use it as:
- morning work
- early finisher activity
- center rotation activity
- homework
- substitute activity
- quick review before state testing
- however else you see fit in your classroom.
