Description

This task cards set contains 24 task cards to help your students practice extending and generating number patterns that follow addition and subtraction rules. There are a variety of question types which helps prepare students for the types of problems they will encounter on standardized tests.

These task cards ask students to:

-Write a rule for a given number sequence and extend the sequence

-Use a given rule and starting number to create a sequence and find a specific term in the sequence

-Analyze a given sequence to determine which number does not belong and explain why

-Generate a number pattern following a given rule and starting at a specified number

-Generate a number pattern of the student's choosing, and state the rule

There is a blank recording sheet provided for your students to record their answers. There is also an answer key which can be used by teachers or students to check work. The answer key is formatted exactly the same as the recording sheet to make grading quick and easy.

Ideas for use:

Task cards are great for use with guided math groups, at math centers, as at home activities, for early finishers, or for differentiating in 3rd and 5th grades. You might also find them to be useful as a supplement to those math lessons which have fewer practice problems than others. I love the idea of pulling a few cards here and there from previous used sets of cards to review and keep concepts fresh! Just assign a problem to a group or the whole class.

Note: This set is also included in my Operations and Algebraic Thinking bundle. Click on the link below to view the 260 card bundle.

I am a math interventionist, so I work with students who are below grade level. My students loved completing these task cards, and were able to understand the wording of each card.

Students loved using these for part of their math rotations. When printed on colorful cardstock, they felt like it was more of a game and less of a worksheet.

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
