What type of numerical patterns can I expect to find in this packet?

  • Given a rule and a starting point, students practice extending patterns
  • Students practice extending patterns involving all four operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division patterns
  • This lesson also includes multiple-choice items where students are given the rule and must choose the matching numerical patterns from four options
  • The challenge level includes numerical patterns with missing terms that must be filled in

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
