What type of shape patterns can I expect to find in these 4th grade patterns worksheets?

  • This lesson includes geometric patterns with shapes made of unit squares, shapes made of dots, and basic 2-dimensional shapes.
  • Students must study how the shapes change as the geometric patterns build to determine the rule or extend the geometric pattern.
  • In some shape patterns, the polygon is simply gaining or losing a side each time.
  • In other, more complex geometric patterns, students must calculate the area of each figure to determine the rule.
  • Each question is unique, so this lesson provides countless opportunities for higher-level thinking and rich discussion!

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, these 4th grade patterns worksheets also include an instructional guide jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.

These 4th Grade Patterns Worksheets are common core aligned to 4th grade standard 4.OA.5 (numerical patterns & shape patterns).

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
