"My students loved this resource. It is hard to find upper elementary craftivities that review content and are fun for kids. Thanks for providing both!"

"We loved making our place value houses. Even students who struggle with place value learned a lot from making these houses. They make a great math display. Best of all, they can make them their own, which is what they loved. It is a great Fun Friday Project!"

Description

This place value craft includes fourth grade and fifth grade versions, including an option with decimals. It's a fun way to practice base ten place value and writing numbers in standard, expanded, and word forms.

Students use a die or spinner to generate a number (6 digits or 9 digits) and write it in standard, expanded, and word form. They also write a word problem using their number and solve it. Then, they fold and decorate the front to look like houses side by side, glue to construction paper, and add a background.

Three versions are included:

  • ones to hundred thousands place (11" x 17" paper or 8.5" x 11" paper)
  • ones to hundred millions place (11" x 17" paper only)
  • thousandths to hundred thousands place (11" x 17" paper only)

Great for differentiation!

This resource includes:

  • teacher directions
  • step by step student directions with photos
  • 3 place value house templates (6 digits or 9 digits, decimals or no decimals)
  • a scoring rubric
  • finished examples
  • an 8.5" x 11" version of the 6 digit template only

Hi Cara,

Thank you for this wonderful suggestion! I've just added a version for 5th graders that includes decimals, going from the thousandths place to the hundred thousands place. I believe this is exactly what you're looking for! Just redownload the file to get this update.
