Description

Voting is one of those topics that feels almost impossible to avoid right now, and your adult ESL students almost certainly have opinions about it. These 64 voting-themed conversation starters give them the space to think out loud, in English, about something that actually matters to them.

You want this because a full set of cards on one focused theme makes it easy to drop into a unit or plan an entire discussion class without scrambling for material. Print them, cut them, hand them out, and let the conversation do the work.

⚠️ A note worth reading before you buy: politics have been kept out of these cards as much as possible. No political parties are mentioned, and the questions are framed around voting itself, not political outcomes. That said, some students will head there on their own. If you think any discussion around voting could get too heated with your current group, this set may not be the right fit. If you do purchase it, review the cards before each new group and set aside any that don't feel right for that class.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

✅ 64 voting-themed conversation starter cards, each printed one per card, adult-appropriate and ready for small group discussions

✅ Teacher suggestion page with usage tips and links to additional resources

✅ Easel version with one discussion prompt per slide for whole-class use

HOW TO USE THESE CARDS

Before class, flip through and pull the cards that feel like the best fit for your group. You don't have to use all 64 at once.

Divide students into pairs or small groups and give each group one or two cards to start. Let them run with it. If things stall, nudge them with a follow-up question... or hand them another card.

Use the Easel version to project a single prompt for a whole-class discussion. One question on the screen keeps everyone focused on the same thread.

These also work well as writing prompts if you want students to put their thoughts on paper before or after discussing.

THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Your intermediate to advanced adult ESL students have plenty of thoughts about civic life, elections, and participation, but they need the right questions to get there. These cards give them a starting point so they can focus on expressing their ideas instead of figuring out what to say. They also work well for older teen students who are ready to talk about real-world topics.

GRAB IT AND GO

Download it, print what you need, cut the cards, and you're set. Laminate them if you want. Use the Easel version if you'd rather skip printing entirely. Either way, you've got 64 conversation starters on a topic your students are already thinking about.

Questions? Drop them in the Q&A section.

This resource was very helpful in prompting ongoing discussions about both the voting process in this country, and this particular election year (2020). Thanks!
