Description

Students love having choice and a little bit of freedom in the work they are completing. You can easily give them that with these math choice boards.

About the Math Choice Boards

This math choice board resource includes 3 math choice boards (2 on a page).

The tasks on the choice boards are challenging and best for students who have mastered the skills.

There is one math choice board for each Operations and Algebraic Thinking Standard for 5th grade.

  1. 5.OA.1 - Order of Operations
  2. 5.OA.2 - Expressions
  3. 5.OA.3 - Patterns and Grids

The printable choice boards are available in two formats: with and without a colored background.

Each math choice board contains tasks for the students to complete independently. Most of the boards contain 4-8 tasks for the students to complete. (The 5.OA.3 choice board includes fewer tasks due to spacing issues.)

The choice boards could be used for homework, independent work, or math centers.

The tasks on the choice boards are challenging and best for students who have mastered the skills.

Example Tasks:

  • What are parentheses, braces, and brackets? How are they used in equations?
  • Create your own saying to remember order of operations (PEMDAS).
  • Explain the Order of Operations in your own words.
  • Write five expressions in word form with these words: the sum of, the quotient, multiplied by, shared equally, less than
  • Make a list of words and phrases that could be used in expressions for each operation. Include at least 4 words or phrases for each operation.
  • Write a scenario that could be represented by this function: y = x + 8 Example: For every page that my little sister reads, I read 8 more pages than her. Let X be the amount of pages she reads and Y the amount of pages I read.

About the Digital Math Choice Boards

The math choice boards have been converted to digital choice boards with Google Slides.

Please see page 3 of each resource for the link to the Google Slides versions.

These digital math choice boards would make excellent distance learning resources. Your students will have some freedom to choose the activities they complete, while still practicing the grade level skills.

Met expectations
This resource worked really well during my station rotations and small-group instruction. The directions were clear, the layout was student-friendly, and it kept my students engaged while allowing me to work with other groups. It was easy to prep and implement right away. I’ll definitely be using this again!

Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 0, and given the rule “Add 6” and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.
