The only materials needed are decks of cards with the Ace, Ten, and Face Cards removed. If you do not have decks available, or if you want the kids to have their own set of numbers to use at home, I have provided a template of numbers 1-9 to print. For the digital version, there are no additional materials needed.

Due to the nature of the activities, no answer key is included.

Example Tasks:

  • Draw 3 cards from a deck of cards and use those 3 cards to create the largest decimal possible and the smallest decimal possible.
  • Compare the values of the digits in these two numbers using the phrases shown. 13.782 and 31.872 (___ is 10 times the value of ___. and ___ is the value of ---)
  • Explain what happens to the zeros in a whole number when you multiply it by a power of 10.
  • Use a deck of cards to create 6 4-digit numbers that go to the thousandths place value. Write the numbers using expanded form.
  • Explain how number lines can help you round decimals by rounding 6.862 to the tenths place using a number line.
  • With the number cards, create 5 “3-digit by 2-digit multiplication equations.” Solve them.
  • Explain the connection between subtraction and division.
  • Write two story problems with decimals as the numbers. Have one of the problems be addition and one be subtraction.
