This Google Slides math lesson for fifth grade demonstrates how place value works by explaining our base ten number system. The lesson includes numbers from the thousandths place up to the millions place, making it perfect for 5th grade Common Core (CCSS) math.

The Lesson:

  • reviews the names of each place in a number from thousandths up to millions
  • explains that a digit's place in a number determines its value (with visuals/concrete modeling to increase conceptual understanding)
  • models base ten by showing how a digits value increases by ten times each time it moves to the left and decreases by ten times each time it moves to the right in a number
  • includes 20 practice problems (just click to reveal the correct answers) plus download a free printable worksheet here (page 4)
