Description

Get your students actively engaged in completing inequalities with decimals and negative numbers with this fun Connect 5 game! This makes a great activity for students to play after a lesson, during math centers, or for review. Kids will have a blast strategizing and blocking each other!

Students play in groups of 2-3 and each takes a different color crayon, colored pencil, or marker. They take turns rolling a die. If they roll an even number, they write a greater than sign (>) in an appropriate box and color the entire box with their color. If they roll an odd number, they do the same with a less than sign (<). In a 2-player game, the winner is the first to get 5 in a row twice on the same board. In a 3-player game, the winner is the first to get 5 in a row one time.

You can differentiate by pairing students up by their ability levels. You can give students who are struggling with negative numbers a copy of the included "Integers on the Number Line" sheet to help them see the comparisons. For your students who need a challenge, you can give them sheet #3 so they can practice comparing negative numbers with decimals.

The first game board is great for introducing the game for the first time to students. Most students should not have trouble comparing positive decimals, so they can focus on understanding the rules of the game before moving up to more challenging problems.

Included in this Product:

•Sheet #1: Positive Rational Numbers

•Sheet #2: Positive and Negative Integers

•Sheet #3: Positive and Negative Rational Numbers

•Answer key for each sheet

•Number line to use as a scaffold for struggling students

•Teacher Instructions

My enrichment class loved this. I put them in groups and set them free. They did great. I did very little teaching, just small prompts and clarifying. Fantastic.
