Description

The 8.NS.A.2 Notes can be used for introducing the standard to your students. The notes are a great way to have students develop understanding of approximating irrational numbers.

Students compare irrational numbers using perfect squares. There are also example problems involving ordering values from least to greatest, and placing irrational values on a number line by using the approximation.

The standard and I can statement are printed clearly at the top of each page. Students enjoy having places they can draw or sketch while completing the problems.

The notes are printer friendly since they do not have any colored components. They also do not overwhelm students since they follow a simple layout. In this packet you will find the original notes to print out for students. You will also find a completed version/answer key provided.

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
