Description

Time is one of those topics your advanced adult ESL students have lots of thoughts and opinions about, and 92 conversation starters give you plenty of material to keep them talking. These adult ESL discussion cards cover everything from time travel and cultural attitudes toward punctuality to personal time management and the philosophy of how we experience time.

Having all 92 cards organized by subtopic means you can pull exactly what fits your lesson, or let students work through a whole theme in one go. No scrambling to come up with follow-up questions.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

✅ 92 time-themed adult ESL conversation starters, organized by subtopic and each printed on its own card

✅ 14 cards on the concept of time

✅ 10 cards on time manipulation

✅ 14 cards on time travel and feasibility

✅ 10 cards on time in culture and society

✅ 12 cards on time in relation to other concepts

✅ 16 cards on time management and utilization

✅ 16 cards on perception and experience of time

✅ Easel version with one prompt per slide for whole-class display

HOW TO USE THESE CARDS

Before class, flip through the subtopics and pull the cards that match your lesson focus or your students' interests. During class, divide students into pairs or small groups and give each group a card or two. Encourage them to share their own perspectives and ask each other follow-up questions. After group time, bring the class back together and have each group share one thing that surprised them about their partner's answer.

The Easel version works well when you want the whole class responding to the same prompt at once.

A NOTE ON LEVEL

These questions are written for advanced ESL students. Some subtopics would work fine with a strong intermediate group, but most of the cards assume students can discuss abstract concepts comfortably in English. If your class is mixed-level, preview the cards and pull the ones that will stretch your intermediate students without losing them.

THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Advanced adult learners need topics with real depth, not just small talk. Time touches philosophy, culture, science, and daily life all at once, so there's something here for every student, regardless of their background. The subtopic organization also makes it easy to connect these cards to a unit you're already teaching.

GRAB IT AND GO

Download, print, cut, and you're ready. Laminate if you want them to hold up for multiple classes over a long period. Or skip printing entirely and use the Easel version. Either way, having 92 questions means you won't run out of material before your students run out of things to say.

Questions? Drop them in the Q&A section.
