Discussion Board Guidelines & Substantive Posts
Hello, Friends,
When I began teaching online graduate courses in Curriculum and Instruction way back in 2004, I was concerned about how students and instructors both communicated and moved forward--together--in the online classroom. Those 100-percent online teaching experiences taught me immediately that very specific instruction need come forth in the classroom--and as a shared discussion between students and teachers, to get the best online discussion board results.
- Going over expectations in full with students in class, perhaps assigning a portion to read as homework before discussing the next day, goes along way in directing student behavior.
- From that point, I always have students do a practice assignment so that they will begin to figure out their own organization and online writing strategies. Depending on the age of your students, they may already have this figured out today--BUT don't count on it! At least I've learned not to.
- I've left this as a Word document for any last-minute changes you'd like to make.
I like pairing this activity with in-class work, theAP rubrics, my essay evaluation comment sheets, and the round robin essay evaluation, study, and revision.
