Description

Here’s a set of activities that will strengthen your first grade students’ ability to use the addition strategy of doubles addition with sums through 20. Great for 2nd grade review, too!

Choosing from four numbers on 24 riddle cards, your students will discover the secret number by solving to eliminate three of the options. With each riddle task card they complete, your students will solve three addition doubles models. They'll have a great time with math and won’t even realize that they’ve completed 72 problems in all!

Because the baseball graphics aren't seasonal, you'll find yourself using this set at any time during the school year!

Looking for a digital alternative? This resource includes 24 full-page slides of the same riddles, great for your interactive board or to use on handheld devices!

This set also includes a printable worksheet version of the same riddles, great for...

* Test prep - multiple choice questions!

* An easy addition to your substitute folder

* Send home for a child who's been absent, or for a child going on an extended
vacation!

* Cut them apart for instant one-time-use task cards. Alternatively, cut each page in
half to use for a shorter lesson or in a small group.

A student recording page, answer key, board game, 9 three-piece puzzles for hands-on practice, and themed number lines are also included.

To encourage flexible knowledge of addition doubles facts, your students will work from expression to sum as well as sum to expression. For example, on one card, they may be given a clue that requires them to solve 6+6, while on another card, they'll be given the sum of 12 and required to associate the fact 6+6.

Here are some ways that you might use the task cards in your classroom:

  • Use in a math center for individual or partner work
  • Use with your document camera for whole class review or to focus attention at the beginning of a math lesson
  • Use as a skills review rotation (aka "Scoot"), individually or with partners, with
students moving to stations around the classroom to solve the clues
  • Use for morning “bell ringers”
  • Use as challenge work or for early finishers
  • Use as an activity with classroom volunteers – they can complete as few or as
    many as time allows!
  • Print in black and white to use in interactive notebooks. Give one puzzle to each student and have them write about their thinking in solving the riddle.
  • Use for RTI or other math remediation. Math intervention teachers love these!

Here's what teachers have said about math riddle task cards:

  • "Great activity for students to work on when I was meeting with a small group! I had my students create their own afterwards as an extension!"
  • "This is a great way to practice the basic skills at a higher level. "
  • "These are just perfect for my first grade classroom. They are so clear and easy to use."
  • "This was a fabulous partner activity. We have 1:1 iPads so we took pictures of the cards and then opened it with an app we could write on. One partner followed the clues and the other checked it with the calculator. They had so much fun and learned so much!"
  • "This provided my students with just the right amount of challenge I was looking for! It got them thinking about this concept in a way they hadn't before. Thank you for creating this resource!"

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
