Help students getter a better understanding of what the value of each digit in number is when they are adding two 2-digit numbers together. Problems with and without regrouping are included. Use the animated PowerPoint slides to guide the lesson and student thinking.

Use this lesson whole group with your students in the classroom or with distance/remote learning.

Use this lesson in small group or for students to work on during as an independent activity.

Whole Group

There are 10 two-digit addition problems in this PowerPoint Lesson

Each problem is shown as a set in two slides

  • The first slide in each set shows the problem as an expression.
  • Give students time to work the problem out on their own using expanded form.
  • Allow students to share their work with a partner, small group, or the whole class.

The second slide in each set shows how the expression can be solved using expanded form.

  • There are animations that reveal each part of the solved problem.
  • With each click, another part of the solved problem will be revealed.

As you go through each set for more practice, ask students ‘what should we do next?’ Students should also help you with each step in the addition problem.

Problem sets that include expressions that involve regrouping have one or two extra steps of adding.

I used this power point to begin our math lessons for using expanded form during our distance learning. It was no prep and easy for the students to follow. I recommend this for second grade.
