I have developed a short tutorial for adding on the open number line. I send this to my families so that they can understand the process. The open number line is a very different way of thinking than the way we were taught when we were kids. In the tutorial, I use the terminology I use with my students, which is emphasizing "hop, stop, label" so kids can see their work in a way that it makes sense.
