Addition features four different types of questions related to the standard:
•Add numbers by a given amount using place-value understanding: Students are given a multiple of 10 and asked to add it to a 5- or 6-digit number. Example: What is 1,000 more than 726,328?
•Add multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm: Example: 82,205 + 76,137. Problems are written vertically and include 4-, 5-, and 6-digit numbers. Students will need to work out their answers on scratch paper. All problems require regrouping.
•Round two numbers and then add the rounded numbers together: Students must use their knowledge of rounding numbers to round two multi-digit numbers to a given place value and then find the sum of those rounded numbers. Example: 8,219 + 3,502; round to the nearest hundreds. Students would round 8,219 to 8,200 and 3,502 to 3,500 before adding, equaling 11,700. Encourage students to use mental math to solve these problems.
•Identify the property used in the equation: Students must use their knowledge of the commutative, associative, and identity properties of addition to identify which property is used in each equation. Example: 56 + 27 = 27 + 56 shows the commutative property.
