Identifying Place Value features four different types of questions related to the standard:

What is the place value of the underlined digit? - Students identify the place value of an underlined digit up to the hundred-thousands place. Example: 389,251; the place value of the underlined digit is ten-thousand.

What is the value of the underlined digit? - Example: 179,162; the value of the underlined digit is 9,000 because the digit is 9 and it’s in the thousands place. The questions all focus on numbers with 6 digits.

Read the clues below. What is the number? - Students must use their knowledge of place value to read a set of clues and write the number. Example: the digit in the tens place is 5, the digit in the ones place is 7, and the digit in the hundreds place is 8. The number is 857. Again, the questions all focus on numbers with 6 digits. (I suggest you have students draw lines, one for each digit, to answer these questions.)

Which of the following is 10 times what an underlined digit represents in a given number? - Example: Which of the following is 10 times what the 6 represents in 8,356? The answer is 60 because the 6 is in the ones place, and 60 is 10 times what the 6 represents.
