Description

This is a set of resources to help you introduce and teach The 8 Rule (adding 8) addition fact strategy. It is a perfect pack of materials to help your first and second grade math students understand the concept underlying this strategy. As a prerequisite, your students need to be fluent with adding 10 to a single-digit number and counting back 2 from a given number. They should also be familiar with The 9 Rule addition fact strategy. The introductory activities are concrete and require multi-linking cubes (the ones that link on all sides), 2 sets of 10 in two different colors, for each participating student or pair of students. There are additional activities with manipulatives, pictures or equations to develop familiarity with the equations underlying this strategy. This set of activities is based on making a ten by subtracting two from the other addend. I have included color and black/ gray/ white options.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
