Description

Looking for a different way to practice addition and subtraction within 10? This set of math riddle task cards & printables are a fun way to build math skills and challenge critical thinking, too!

Here's how these math riddle cards work!

Choosing from four numbers on each card, your students will discover Ms. Cactus' mystery number by adding and subtracting to eliminate three of the options. With each riddle task card they do, your students will solve three addition or subtraction number models. They'll have a great time and won’t even realize that they’ve completed 72 problems in all!

This set also includes the same 24 riddles in a printable worksheet format (four riddles per page). Great to send home in a printable pack, use for standardized test prep, and for substitute teachers. Also, the printable worksheets are perfect for sending with students who are going on extended family vacations!

Because the cute cactus graphics aren't seasonal, you'll find yourself using this set at any time during the school year!

Here are some ways that you might use these addition and subtraction riddles in your teaching!

✅ Use in a math center for individual or partner work.

✅ Use the task cards with your document camera or during an online class session for whole class review, or to focus attention at the beginning of a math lesson.

✅ Use as a skills review rotation (aka "Scoot"), individually or with partners, with students moving to stations around the classroom, solving the cards as they go around.

✅ Use the task cards or printables for morning “bell ringers”.

✅ Use the task cards or printables as challenge work or for early finishers.

✅ Use as an activity with classroom volunteers – they can complete as few or as many as time allows!

✅ Use for RTI or other math remediation. Math intervention teachers love these!

✅ Use the writing pages to develop a math/writing connection. They're a good tool to help students at all levels prepare for explaining their thinking on standardized tests.

Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
