Description

An alien math game for single-digit addition within 20 and subtraction from 10 for your alien activities unit! Use independently as math fact fluency flashcards or to play an individual game as a companion with other space-themed activities. (For example, if using as an early finisher activity, students can try to see how many cards they can get before centers is over.) Also included is an alien math worksheet if you would like some additional accountability for your students.

Or, students can play the alien math game with a partner to play these games:

  • War – each play flips over a card. Solve the addition or subtraction problem. Whoever has the larger number wins (or a smaller number, to change things up!)
  • Kaboom or Bang! – see below for how to play

★★★ Download the preview to see everything that is included in the alien math game. ★★★

What’s Included in the alien activities?

  • Single-digit addition cards for numbers 0-10
  • Single-digit subtraction cards for 0-10
  • Math fact fluency games printable worksheet

How to Play:

  1. Spread the cards out into a pile.
  2. Choose a card from the pile
  3. Read the math problem on the card. If you can answer the problem, keep the card. If you can’t, put the card back. (If they are playing with a partner or group, I suggest having them help the student if they missed it so they can learn it for next time). :)
  4. Special Cards
  • Alien! – Put all of your cards back into the pile
  • Planet – Draw another card
  • Lose a turn – If playing with a partner or group, you lose a turn
  • Skip – If playing with a partner or group, you skip the person who has a turn after you

★ Pick and choose which pages you want to do, print, laminate and you're all set! You can time students for several minutes to see how many problems they can do, and use to inform instruction. Or they can complete it at a math fact center or during morning work.

★ Use all the cards or choose which cards to use based on the math facts your students are learning.

★ Also included are cards in black and white to save on ink!

Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
