This can be used as an incentive to return homework, reading logs, or just about anything that you want returned promptly. In my classroom, my theme is baseball. Each day the students start on the green in "invisible" ink. If they stay on green, They get their card punched once. However, their first warning is their name on the yellow baseball (aka strike one), second warning (or strike two) is their name on the red baseball and strike three, they are out (to the office).
However good behavior is just as important. I have a purple baseball they can move "up to" if they are on-task and well-behaved. They get their card punched twice, a piece of licorice and they get to line up first. What an incentive!
